Critical steps to prevent mold growth after water damage. Mold can develop within 24-48 hours.
- 1Act within 24-48 hours — mold grows quickly in wet conditions
- 2Remove standing water as soon as possible
- 3Increase air circulation with fans and open windows
- 4Use dehumidifiers to reduce humidity below 60%
- 5Remove wet carpeting and padding
- 6Do NOT use bleach on porous surfaces — it does not kill mold roots
- 7Do not paint over mold — address the moisture source first
- 8Check hidden areas: behind walls, under flooring, in HVAC ducts
